• American physicist, Julius Robert Oppenheimer, architect of the nuclear bomb during the Second World War, dies at age 62.
• Three Greek army colonels mount a coup d'état.
• The third Israeli-Arab conflict, or the Six Day War, erupts. Israel wins, allowing it to expand its territory.
• World boxing champion (all categories) Cassius Clay, henceforth known as Mohammed Ali, refuses to complete his military service. He is sentenced to five years in prison for draft evasion.
• Ernesto Che Guevara, international revolutionary and former comrade-in-arms of Fidel Castro during the Cuban revolution, is killed by the Bolivian Army.
• Professor Christian Barnard successfully performs the first heart transplant.
