Jean-Jacques Bertrand (1916-1973)
Jean-Jacques Bertrand was the last leader of the Union nationale to become Premier of Quebec. His long political career began when he was elected member of the Legislative Assembly in 1948. He was re-elected in six following elections. In 1961, Bertrand entered the leadership race to replace Antonio Barrette as leader of the Union nationale. He lost to Daniel Johnson. When Johnson died suddenly in 1968, he became Acting Party Leader. His time as Premier was marked by the passage of Bill 63, legislation that angered the French population in Quebec.
